The Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, & Gender Expansive Identities seeks to educate counselors to the unique needs of client identity development in a non-threatening counseling environment by aiding in the reduction of stereotypical thinking and homo-prejudice.
The mission of SAIGE-LA includes the recognition of both individual and social contexts representing the joining of race, ethnicity, class, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, ability/disability, spiritual or religious belief system, or indigenous heritage in order to:
A. Promote a greater understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues among members of the counseling professionals.
B. Improve standards and delivery of counseling services provided to Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons.
C. Identify and work to eliminate conditions which create barriers to the individual development of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons.
D. Develop, implement, and/or foster interest in charitable, scientific, and educational programs designed to further the interests of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons.
E. Secure equality of treatment, advancement, qualifications, and status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons in counseling and development of work.
F. Publish a journal and other scientific, educational, and professional materials with the purpose of raising the standards of all who work in counseling.
G. Facilitate a broader awareness of issues in counseling lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons among the helping professions.
